在元模型中,我们已经学习过必要和可能的语气词。而在密尔顿模型中,我们只讨论语气词。.
The term “Modal operators” might sound weird. This refers to your mode of operating. They are words like must, should, can’t, have to, mustn’t, can, will and indicate possibility or necessity. There is a big difference between doing something because you feel you have to and because you want to.
Some examples of Modal Operators
Necessity: Words like “should”, “must”, and “have to” are modal operators of necessity. For example, “You should know this by now” or “You must do this right from now on”.
Possibility: Words like “can” and “cannot” are modal operators of possibility.
And of course an Exercise with Modal Operators
Complete the following sentences using the correct modal of necessity:
- “If Richard wants to become a professional musician, he ______________ every day”
- “According to the law, drivers ______________ at stop signs”
- “When a police officer asks to see your driver’s license, you ______________ to him/her”
See if you can detect the Modal Operators of Necessity:
- Many limitations are based on belief and beliefs can be changed.
- Limiting beliefs can be identified with the words “cannot” or “impossible”.
