In the Meta Model we have already leant that there are Modal Operators of Necessity and Possibility. Here in the Milton Model we only talk about Modal Operators.

The term “Modal operators” might sound weird. This refers to your mode of operating. They are words like must, should, can’t, have to, mustn’t, can, will and indicate possibility or necessity. There is a big difference between doing something because you feel you have to and because you want to.

Some examples of Modal Operators

Necessity: Words like “should”, “must”, and “have to” are modal operators of necessity. For example, “You should know this by now” or “You must do this right from now on”.

Possibility: Words like “can” and “cannot” are modal operators of possibility.

And of course an Exercise with Modal Operators

Complete the following sentences using the correct modal of necessity:
  • “If Richard wants to become a professional musician, he ______________ every day”
  • “According to the law, drivers ______________ at stop signs”
  • “When a police officer asks to see your driver’s license, you ______________ to him/her”

See if you can detect the Modal Operators of Necessity:
  • Many limitations are based on belief and beliefs can be changed.
  • Limiting beliefs can be identified with the words “cannot” or “impossible”.
